Best wishes from Barbados!!!!
i had a face wash with gear oil one day when putting a new rear diff seal on... prob the worst taste i have ever experienced
great job.
Nissan R200 diff is so much easier to adjust
The uterus, bladder, and rectum are subject to Proplapse. def. a slipping forward or down of one of the parts or organs of the body.
Rather than running the diff in reverse, why don’t you just turn it upside down?
Anyone else really enjoy the quick cuts of unbolting. Your editing is getting much better Rob.
I wonder if you can have someone machine a ring and pinion that are in reverse orientation?
Methanethiol is an organosulfur compound with the chemical formula CH ₃SH. It is a colorless gas with a distinctive putrid smell. It is a natural substance found in the blood, brain and feces of animals, as well as in plant tissues. It also occurs naturally in certain foods, such as some nuts and cheese. www.mudomaha.com/blog/why-does-natural-gas-smell-rotten-eggs
The very last thing Rob said was "Why the he'll does this gear oil smell like shit?" Lol,,, I think it's from high sulfur content which is similar to rotten eggs. It's also so you don't confuse it with motor oil because you can tell by the odor. Natural gas has Sunkist odorant added called "mercaptan" for safety reasons otherwise it's odorless and you could blow yourself up if striking a switch or match
Yo Rob! I've never set backlash on a diff before but I think if you just read the factory manual, they have a much easier way to do the adjustment,,, I believe it involves using a dial indicator! And or maybe some white grease or paint on the teeth
So this mean that in 16 days finally we gonna watch this car ripping?
Had the same experience with old nasty gear oil in the hair. Smell still makes me gag 50 years later. Thank goodness Corvair Corsa trans-axels are tough and don't break often. Love the project. Thanx Rob
That really is a easy job.
*cries in mechanic*
Rob why don't you finish your videos properly. It just all of a sudden end's.
It might be too late to tell you now. If you're able to not destroy the old bearings, take a carbide bit to the inside bore of the bearings and you can use them as "set up" bearings. Very useful to have when setting up a diff.
At 8:20 into the video, why's there a mask in your back pocket? Lol
rectum...damn near killed em
You could do a 4 clutch lsd in that diff for better lockup, stock is 2 clutch.
When will this car be finished? After 1000 videos? With your time, money and resources, this project should've been done and dusted weeks ago. There is nothing wrong with taking time for a well done project. Aerodynamically, I am sorry to say, your cooling solution is an absolute mess. You have unnecessary weight beyond the front axle. You have tubes blocking a great percentage of the rads' frontal area. You have 2 heat exchangers physically conducting energy between each other. Suspension kinematics are far from ideal as well. Come on... With your time and budget, you could've done so much better. Anyway, your top speed and acceleration will suffer, particularly above 70 or 80mph. Power is not everything.
When do T-shirt’s ship?
Probably there is no space but if you mount it upside down, it will run "forward" and use the right side of the gear teeth?
Hahahaa FLEX on them Rob.. u earned it💪🏾😎
Who the thumbs down these videos? You must be the “haters” of the world. This stuff is absolutely phenomenal
I came here for cat videos'.. disappointed..
Hey Rob, watch this german video regarding changing the direction in the BMW diff: fiworld.info/goon/dY6Y0mW0qW2vmJ8/videot.html
The only YT channel i need to watch at 1.75x speed just to keep sane. Still fun though!
Hey rob I am wanting to swap something with a 13 b and was wondering if you could give me some info
Wow that is e34 bmw diff i have the same in my e30 m52b28 swap
If you want a diff that rotates in the correct direction there's alternatives. I know Mercedes and Audi rotate in opposite direction of each other when going forward. Not sure if BMW are identical to MB or Audi
The forces on the diff gear will be the same either in forwards or revere if ran , however the diff casing strength will be the weak point as will be webbed and reinforced for running in opposite direction
a german guy called philipp kaes is building an billet diff housing and custom gearing cause he wants to run it in his rs4 and the original configuration would also run in reverse in his car maybe you can get together there
how come this oil smell like shit ???? .... i guess Rob don't know where the restroom is at
God Dahm Rob Damn
Peg your diff. In the land rover world we don't have the best diffs/axles😂 so we peg the diff by have a phospha-bronze Pas running on the back of the crown wheel held in place by some studs through the diff case. This stops the crown teeth walking up the pinion screw and stripping teeth. Best strength mod you can make
Rob you just answered the reason why you use Keeps. It was the rx7 gear oil fault. Lol.
Gear oil is the worst smelling thing on a car.
safety glasses my dude, your eyes only grow back once
Rob why did you go to grindr to buy a diff!?
you're a grub lol
New diff who dis
I do not owe anyone anything now with the help of, *p a i d t o b e h o m e .c o m*
German car youtuber Philipp Kaess is using the same/ a similar diff in his rs4 limo build and he also ran into the whole driving it backwards problematic. They are now engineering a new billet housing that flips everything to drive it the right way around and use the strong side of the teeth. Might wanna get in contact with him.
just as a point of reference.. if that diff is not designed to go in reverse, i would suggest you take high detailed measurements of the current ring an pinion and put that in a cad file and make a new one capable of living in reverse
Robs help reminds me of Pedro from Napoleon's dynamite. VOTE FOR PEDRO:-)
I like how Rob has the right tool, but just uses the wrong side of it.
Start saving now and you'll be able to replace the diff after it destroys itself from driving it backwards. Hypoid gearsets like the ring and pinion have an offset to compensate for the drive rotation which is now going completely ass backwards.
No, hypoid just moves the pinion below the centre-line of the crown wheel, amboid is above the centre-line. I do agree that the thrust is now on the wrong face though..
8:22 just casually chatting about 260mph.... no big deal lol
Rob what do u think about the AWD M3 competition
Diff oil dahm stinks.
Why not use a quick change rear end from a drag race set up ? That BMW diff looks like a crack waiting to happen .
Whait, this goes backwards? The normaly coasting teeth side gets load? This diff wil break sooner or later. Beacuse of the angle of the teeth there will be a shit ton of side load on the pinion, reason why you are not suposed to drag heavy loads in reverse.. Simple fix flip the casing upside down and that wil work.
Why don't you just fix it and change the way the splines are going?
I sont know about everyone else, but I was happy to hear i wasnt the only one who got Transmission oil all over my hair
Why didn't you flip the diff upside down so it rotated correct way
Tis the season of rob Dahm once again
If you worked on German hardware you would know the joke is they are tool companies that just happen to sell cars. They make a special very thin wall socket for most yoke retaining nuts. They do not want the average mechanic to take apart their stuff.
Diff oil is hands down the worst smell when it comes to working on cars.
You don’t shim under the pinion bearing like a Ford? To set pinion depth?
@Ramjet You are correct, using the existing shims will always get you 95% close from experience
I re use all my crush sleeves, zero fucks gone 8’s and nines but I still appreciate you
Pinion should have a + or - number to indicate the pinion variation from “0”. +5 means the pinion is 5 thou bigger, and you need to compensate by taking 5 thou out of the shim thickness. -5 means the pinion needs 5 thou added to shim thickness. If original pinion was +5 and new is -5, the pinion variation cancels and you need no shims.
Shims should be between pinion gear and inner bearing. Reusing existing shims will probably get you very close to the right setup. The shimming is usually case specific, not ring and pinion specific. IE the cases and carrier have more machining error than the gears
I guess it could go either way. But I was going to shim the race on the pinion and save the crush sleeve for the preload without changing that depth. Honestly this is only my second rodeo 😂
Rob, you should add some round sump magnets to the diff that will help with the fine metal. You should also call BMW and ask it the rear lubricates in reverse some splash oiled diffs use splash and the rotation of the diff to pump oil up to the pinion bearings it would be worth a call...
Woohoo, no midrolls! Love your work and commitment to educating us all.
That was almost an outro. Good progress rob👍
I thought your name was pronounced “damn” and you were related to jean-Claude
Now we know why Rob Dahm needs keeps for his hair.
fiworld.info/goon/Y4zL1qWmt2JsfJs/videot.html Banks did research showing your ring and pinion could be damaged due to oil aeration by flat differential covers under large torque. If you love gear oil, keep that cover.
It's worth watching some of the stuff Gale Banks looked at while trying to figure out the efficiency of the rear diff covers on the after market versus the stock units. Interesting exploration into fluid dynamics. Only bring this up because of your flat cover.
Stolen engine
The intro of your video reminded me of a cooking youtuber. Cooking with shotgun red fiworld.info
Has $300,000 car *buys eBay transmission* I consider this a win for the junkyard boys
you should get multiple cases so you can switch out the gear ratios when you want to with out going through this process every time
One step closer. Interesting for someone like me who knows nothing about diffs.
Never Google goatse
It's a good thing they make percision things to measure things
Ok real question. If the diff is running in reverse, why not just flip it upside down and make new mounts? Packaging problem? Doesn’t fit upside down? Doesn’t hit the G-Spot? For real though.
I am a firm believer that the worst smelling fluid that is in a car is gear grease.
As a transmission R&I guy, I feel your sentiment towards gear oil. Worst smelling shit in the world. Coolant however, sweet as a peach mmmmm
How to bust a nut Rob style
If you flip the differential upside down it will run the outputs the opposite direction. Something to consider rather than running it in reverse under power and destroying those hard to find gears you just installed.
The pinion should not have any shims. You can only adjust side to side I believe.
Rob I have a very important question, you said your front diff is always running in reverse because it's a diff off the rear of a bmw, but here's my question, why didn't you just flip the diff upside-down, minor mods need to be done but it's super easy and common and will lengthen the life of you're diff
The timing of this couldnt be awesomer. I am rebuilding my diff for my big tires offroad miata this upcoming weekend. Im upgrading the 4.1 stock rear gearset to a 5.38 Paco motorsports rear gearset. Just waiting on all the bearings to come in the mail.
Given the fact that the rotation is now going to be reversed, are the pinion bearings going to be lubed correctly? There is an oil galley that the ring(in regular rotation) serves as a water-wheel and directs oil into the galley and constantly lubes the pinion bearings.
If you want a basically zero slip diff, I have seen a torsen diff for sale for the E36 BMW that should bolt up to the ring gear as it's a drop in replacement for the stock. Don't remember the power rating though if there even was one listed.
Japanese bearings and a German R&P joint merger. I seem to remember they teamed up once before. What could go wrong?
Friend of mine had a bottle of gear oil explode in the back of his focus. It was easily the worst smell ever... gear oil in a 110 degree car is extremely vomit inducing.
A 1000 mice power with a 5.14 7 tooth pinion diff. It will last a very short time. And drain the oil first! You shim the pinion inner bearing to raise or lower in the carrier. The crown wheel carrier usually comes in various offsets to put it closer to the smaller pinion. And then shim or adjust to do the final adjustment. Though as you say the diff is running in reverse so you need a front diff with the teeth cut the right direction.
You call it grease I call it men’s conditioner.
Even rob can't escape making bmw content
If you need to hammer something Get a hammer Don't use your hand
Wouldn't flipping the diff 180 degrees over solve the "going in reverse" thing? Then again that would require new mounts n axles...
But will put the pinion up and out of the oil.
If you crack the diff housing just buy a block of billet and us that beautiful cnc and back a new one stronger
"How the hell does this oil... Smell like SHIT" best outtro ever 😂
Rob, this is senseless in the longrun. contact this guy! fiworld.info/goon/dY6Y0mW0qW2vmJ8/videot.html He is putting a BMW diff in an Audi. They are building a mirrored BMW diff from scratch because the Audi driveshaft spins in the oppsite direction. They really know what they are doing. Differentials for motorsport applications are their daily bread.
I thought you were gonna use your gear oil story to smoothly transition to your hair product sponsor I'm slightly disappointed lol
At least you get to shim IRS diffs on a bench. My Mustang diff had me under the car hucking the torsen in and out like a very delicate kettlebell. Really tiring and tedious when your car is not on a lift.
I can relate to that gear oil story
Hair is lookin feathered and lethal alpha rob.
4:00 it's a bearing "race"
Prolapse was correct. Insides coming out. It would be a good idea to also make a solid pinion bearing spacer. The crush type is not suitable for this sort of use
